How do you get Excel to fully understand the Date/time Start field? Even when I format the field as a date field with a custom format,  Excel still has difficulty distinguishing AM times as befor PM.

It's a text field, not a date, so formatting it won't help.  I insert a new column to the left of Start Date and use the DATEVALUE() formula.  e.g. if column N is a new blank column, in N2 I enter =DATEVALUE(O2), format that as date/time and copy it down the column.
