If you planning on stopping by Doughnuts & Dragons

while in town for Gen Con...well they are going out of business on 7/30

That alters my plans.

I’m flying in on the 2nd and was going to drop by for a bit. Guess I’ll just go to my hotel, drop my bags off, and head to the ICC.

Thanks for the update.  It was a stop we were going to make once we flown in.  The timing is too bad.  If they could have stayed open just one more week, I think it would have been beneficial.

Judging from my experience stopping there during GenCon, the place was empty!

Oh.  I haven't heard about it until this year.  I guess if the place was empty, that explains the closure.

IMO they are closing because

  1. 95% of the people who gamed there were tight wads
  2. there was no table fee

I use to go a few times a month and I would drop between $20-$40 on beers. There folks who sit there ALL DAY playing games without buying anything.

I disagree with the premise but the conclusion is correct.

Doughnuts and Dragons had a great space to play with the business expectation that if you stayed long enough you would buy something. Unfortunately the customer expectation that if you are not forced to buy something you don't need to buy something was the take away.

These are at odds and at the first sign of shortfall the business didn't correct as from their own posts they didn't see anything in their business model that needed to be "fixed". The location became troublesome as well. I first thought it was great tucked away in Keystone at the crossing, but being a "family friendly hangout" in a dense residential area it seems they became free baby sitters.

I still believe this type of business could succeed you would just need a more fiscal focus on actual business vice a friendly hobby shop mentality.

I went in Friday and bought one of each kind of donut they had AND learned to play Robo Rally!  Yeah I imagine if the clientele was mostly kids with no money that would not really work out great though
